My Humming Word

In a sudden breath of April-May air
The barren trees, brown and bare
Awake suddenly to build a pale domain
Of pink and white blossom across the plain.
A Cherry-blossom realm born of fleeting grace
That leaves no shadow and no trace.

Japanese tradition – mono no aware
A profound awareness of impermanence
The plains as well where mountains rise
A blanket folds beneath the skies
Ten thousand crowns of paper snow
Set all panoramic city streets aglow.

Unruffled by winter’s freeze or summer’s fire
They bloom alone by their own deep desire
They rule a week, they claim the crown
Then rain their gentle velvet down
That is how they universally symbolize
Renewal, hope and fleeting nature of life.
