My Humming Word

  1. Poem

Portuguese Man o’ War

Neither reckon it by a single form
Nor seek one rhyme in a single part
Instead, a choir of countless lives
United to work for a common quest.

It doesn’t have a recognizable
Heart, brain, lungs, shell or bones
Yet together they become a whole –
Like many minds that keep one alive.

One part spreads feast beneath the sea
The other guards with stinging threads
They are bound with a shared purpose
Beyond beating hearts, or bones, or heads.

Sea currents write the wandering chart
Guided by Nature’s perfect art
Mighty whales may command the sea
But Nature’s true gift is keeping us free.

If mankind would ever learn from me
Remember this before you flee
The strongest kingdoms are often built
Within a kind, willing and giving heart.
