A silver flash born in gravel beds
Where mountainous fresh waters glimmer
Spindle-shaped body with bronze parr marks
For speed and camouflage from predators
Inhabitant of cold North Atlantic streams
As domicile where the young life dreams.
In and around Greenland coastal currents
A critical foraging ground of these fishes
Mapping hundreds of miles from rivers
They feed, they grow pretty long and strong
Only to swim homewards to waters they belong
With the mirrored scales and a tireless grace
They cleave through waves in ceaseless race
A tedious journey driven by instincts deep
To the river of origin, a covenant they keep.
Back home, they cease feeding
Engage in upstream travel and reproduction
Males undergo dramatic transformation
Females dig shallow gravel nests, spawning redds
In gravel beds of cold oxygen-rich running streams
Where they lay the eggs of future dreams
The males would fight to score the prize
That is how golden life begins to rise.
