My Humming Word

Some echoes locked in the vault of memories
Some whispers drowned in the ocean of years
Some shadows buried under the dust of ages—
Haunt him like strains of some ancient rhymes.

Old photos, faded letters and keep-sakes, few—
Still hold the warmth of what once was so true
Revive dreams that his heart & soul still mourn
Wake a heartache he thought was long gone.

Some words spoken, and some also left unsaid
Some dreams lie buried, some hopes lie dead
The chances never taken, opportunities missed
Priceless tender moments that time dismissed.

What tangled threads of destiny govern the heart—
Knowing well the days of yore, yet refuse to part
Although reason warns him that the past is gone
His basic instinct still urges him to travel on.

He bears pain, grieving the one who understood
His solemn silences as none other ever could
Perhaps this penance is to stay as his lifelong cost
For he still carries the dearest friend; inane he lost.
