My Humming Word

  1. Poem

Silverine of Sargasso

In weed-tangled Sargasso Sea, it sees dawn of life
Born in alkaline, away from the land and strife
Tiny leptocephalus drifts on the current of tide
Across the far and wide ocean, fish hitch a ride.

With the pulse of tide, under moon’s eye pale
It rises to the river’s mouth to turn in Glass Eel
In fresh green water, they grow and they feed
To become yellow eels, with all that they need.

Now clad in yellow, the serpentine Eel of the silt
Gains mastery in ambush, where the reeds are built
They carve their home in the mud and pebbles
Pretty patient and private thriving in shadows.

With derma like velvet and its jaw firm and tight
It enjoys quite waters in complete ease and rest
It breathes through river for over a decade’s span
Until the spirit of wide ocean calls it once again.

Years gone by, now they turn bright and silver
Ready to leave the pebble home and the river
They resort to a final voyage, the dark and deep
Back to the Sargasso Sea, a promise they keep.

In the deep of the weeds, in a world unknown
Now the spawn is scattered like stars in the brine
Body of parents vanish into the ocean’s drawing
The life-cycle thus concludes into a new beginning.
