Where the Pamban span kissed the blue
Tethering, island to the Mandapam seashore
The inquisitive student knelt; age twenty years
To study what the deep oceanic abyss shares.
The local fishermen in patterned clothes
Watched the boy from the college books
Presenting a crescent guard of quiet pride
To help him unlock the secrets of the tide.
It was neither phantom, nor ephemeral shade
But a live power house waiting in the glare
The big mottled fish, a silver living electric ray
A sleeping current in his hands, in disarray.
The Pamban bridge, a spanning-steady vertex
At sacred shores, ancient currents start to mix
Where the Gulf of Mannar meets the gaze
Memories take him back to student teen age.
