My Humming Word

The Monolithic Water Tower

The monolith relies on sheer mass and storage
A mechanism whereby it will survive and thrive
Where dry earth cracks and rivers cease to flow,
But the majestic Baobab permits no thirst to grow.

Looks like a cylinder of grey and fibrous might
It leisurely drinks fleeting rains and holds it tight
The trunk swells its massive body with the flood
And stores plenty of water in its fibrous blood.

The sun might strike with gold and burning ire
Thereby wraps the Spiny Desert in its fire
But Baobab does not fade, it does not bend or fall
Akin to the true anchor and an animate wall.

Thick, spongy bark protects from Savanna wildfires
An individual tree has a life of a thousand years
It renders fruit, water, bark fibre, and medicines
People revere it as a home for the ancestral spirits.
