My Humming Word

  1. Poem

Friends That We Were

We were friends, separated and built own spheres
Beneath the steady laws of the rolling years
New identities were anchored to obligate spheres
Bound by diverse fortunes, duties and highways.

The world commands a script for what we are
And a strict decorum for our unmapped fire
By counting the distance, questioning our line
To freeze our spirit rendering lesser sanguine.

Let the earthly ledgers reckon their fleeting line
They cannot value your vanished prime or mine
The friends we were require no earthly stage
No explanation or defence to a cautious age.

So if we ever meet, we shall meet with quiet grace
With due regard to the time, context and the place
We need no bridge to cross social seas we brave
Knowing you are happy and safe will suffice for me.
