My Humming Word

The Symbiotic Grace

On the white sand where the currents are warm
A sessile titan is anchored away from the storm
What a velvet mantle in turquoise and grey-gold
A beguiling tale of solar light, a partnership hold.

The giant clam has survived for millions of years
With mastery of disruptive colouration and ironies
It’s no hunter of shadows and no seeker of prey
Instead, it opens its heart to the brilliance of day.

Through the windows of crystal – iridocytes bright
It channels the heavens and harvests the sunlight
Deep in its mantle tissues, are the emerald seed
The symbiotic algae that flower to cater its need.

A wonderful balance of power, in a selfless design
Where the creature and a plant in beauty entwine
While the host provides a safe and sheltered space
The tiny plants grant food to fuel its massive grace.
