My Humming Word

Editor’s Pick

Sitting amid the hollow space of time
Where even hours forgot to chime
Suddenly, the dusty curtains drew
And the faded ink began to seep anew
The reels of yesteryear began to unwind
Unleashing shadows of joy and pain abound.

A reflection, I had lost you long ago
and sustained that loss like a wound:
An incertitude of youth
A thousand unspoken words
A door I was too timid or shy to open
May be helpless too to keep from closing.

I blamed myself all these passing years:
For every possible thought that came
Such as, the fears of an adolescent age
For social compulsions I could not defy
For choosing silence when my heart
was crying and pleading to be heard.

And I watched through the passing years:
Lovers became husbands and wives
Then their youthful storms settling to a dull
regime of habit, duty, cribs and complaints
Once electric with passion, and ever joyful
Their hands are now steady and still.

Remarkably, I no longer envy them
For what they achieved in life together
Perhaps I have preserved it all in memory…

That becoming moonstruck at first sight
That silky feeling of tenderness without want
That regard which never needed possession
And now, a quiet, pure joy of simply knowing
That sometime and somewhere in this world
Another soul had once made mine tremble.

We could never give our love a name
That the world would know and recognise
No vows spoken, no sacred fire sanctified us
No photographs ever preserved our saga
No commitment ever made for mundane
Yet nothing was ever broken between us.

Perhaps that is the reason why
Whenever your memory returns
It does not come with loads of any regret
It comes softly, as if evening light on window
It comes like a forgotten sweet song
Whose very first note tugs at the heartstrings.

And now I seriously ponder:
Did I really lose you in life?
Or life, in its strange and enigmatic wisdom
Took away the ordinary destiny of our love
So that till my last breath I might keep
Its extraordinary innocence with me!

I cannot say what we might have become
Perhaps even we would have had same fate!
But for sure now: I don’t have to forgive you
For disappointing my dreams
Also I am never needed to forgive myself
For ever disappointing yours.

And therefore, somewhere beyond indeed
The reach of time, age and circumstance
You remain exactly as my heart thinks of you:
Neither possessed nor abandoned
And so also not forgotten…
Loved, only loved.

So let the mundane world call ours
A chronicle that never happened
Nonetheless I shall call it
The single most beautiful story
That happened once within me…
and never ended.
