It looks like an architecture of the thorny spires
With so many branches growing vertical and high
Tall Alluaudia lives where lands are hot and dry
So curiously watches desert clouds go rolling by
A role model for the defence and efficiency
It’s colossal with tiny leaves and lethal spines grey
This wonder water-saving soul is tough and strong
A strange and lovely tree where wilds belong.
Its sparse leaves are coloured bright and green
Tucked safe among the sharpest spikes ever seen
It offers no soft solace, shade or rest to travellers
Instead, a lethal lattice to ward off herbivores.
In Madagascar’s hot, sun-drenched desert lands
Their trunks yield timber, bark cures aching strands.
