Many of us do not like to be placed under a discipline or order of any kind because we perceive them as hindrances and irritants. In the process, we tend to become discriminatory in our day to day routine both at home and work. This tendency often leads to a lot of mess in our personal or professional life affecting those who are somehow connected with us.
At home we are dealing with our spouse, elders, children, near relatives and friends. At work, we may be dealing with our boss(es), colleagues, subordinates and general public as clients, managing functions like administration, billing, payment and accounting, information technology, health services, education, trade and industrial matters, housing, vehicle licensing, public transport, welfare services, editing and publishing etc. This list is only illustrative and not comprehensive.
Should we not learn from our experiences in public places like a booking window at railways reservation office or airport? As soon as there is more than one passenger, a queue is suo moto formed or pressed. This ensures order and equal treatment to every passenger. If ever anyone tries to jump the queue, it instantly creates dissatisfaction and resentment among others. If the booking clerk ever tries to overtly or covertly give priority to someone, it is not without compromising and harming others’ interest in the queue.
Education and high office should not make us arrogant. Arrogance would only mean that we are educated illiterates or occupying an undeserving office. Therefore, if there are rules and order, one must follow it irrespective of position held. At work places, it becomes more so relevant because if you become discretionary in dealings, it leads to the lack of transparency, inefficiency, customer dissatisfaction and corrupt practices.
One way of ensuring transparency, efficiency and satisfaction at work place, irrespective of work discipline, would be to follow queue in disposal of work in chronological order. Handling the work that came in first would not only lead to transparency, equity and fairness but also ensure efficiency, effectiveness and greater satisfaction of all. Discretion cannot be completely ruled out but it should be used only sparingly and in deserving cases.
