My Humming Word

Across the mountains, cliffs, and coasts
From Arctic tundra winds to hot deserts
The Peregrine raptor rides the open sky
A restless and mighty lord who passes by.

Blue-grey mantle with a barred white breast
Long wings and dark hood upon a noble crest
Large and keen eyes fashioned to behold
Even a feather’s flick in sunlight gold.

The rushing wind becomes his affable song
His powerful pointed wings bear him along
No animals that fly or run, no fish that swims
Can match the speed God bestowed on him.

From mid-air heights unseen, he starts his dive
To strike his prey, as a spear comes swiftly alive
The pigeon, dove, or duck is too late to flee
As the raptor falcon folds by a grand decree.

On the sea-cliff ledge or the mountain wall
Where none but winds and soaring eagles call
The pair dance in flight, and return to cling
To guard the life their eggs shall bring.

The young peregrines, beneath watchful eyes
Soon practice and learn the language of skies
Where earth meets cloud and winds prevail
There flies the timeless Peregrine Falcon’s tale.
