Along Pacific shore, it basks on rocks and sand
From Canada to Mexico, by ocean and by land
There the eared explorer finds its wild domain
A sleek-furred guardian of the cool, misty rain.
With powerful flippers, it dives the frozen deep
Dark fur and smooth body cuts the ocean steep
Its powerhouse frame is muscle-tuned to dive
As also a customized live-machine to stay alive.
Every year just once, they claim their ground
On sun-drenched shores, mighty bulls contend
They meet on the sand to guard their fragile line
The pups are born and reared, that’s quite divine.
Alas! Greedy hands pursue them for oil and skin,
Ruthlessly hunting down this ocean-dwelling kin.
