In Utah forests where the high winds blow,
A single Pando life begins to stretch and grow
Not thousands of trees there stand alone
But a vast giant comprised of root and bone.
Beneath the soil, a secret network weaves
Magnificent “Trembling Giant” of myriad leaves
When autumn arrives, a single golden shade
Paints every branch across the mountain glade.
Though bitter winds may strike mountain crest
They cannot shake this giant’s wooden breast
Through hidden veins, the mountain waters flow
And deep below, the ancient rootstocks grow.
The Giant leaves no seeds upon the forest floor
But grows new shoots to bloom forevermore
A timeless lesson carved in its bark and leaf
In unity, man can find shared strength and belief.
Pando (Populus tremuloides)
