My Humming Word

The silver hunter scans the world of day
To strike the target in its single spray
Knocking the insect from a leafy screen.
Beneath mangrove bay where branches lean
Its sharp eyes break the boundary line of light
Correcting for the stream with flawless sight.

Tongue pressed against mouth’s deep groove
It locks the pressure in a narrow course
Then shoots a water jet in one swift move,
To strike the ambushed prey with a deadly force
The fluid gathers momentum as it flies
The tail overtakes the head and strikes!

A single slug of water from the skies
Brings down the quarry to the riverbed
Here hydro-ballistics writes its ancient rule:
A tangible blueprint left for human minds
To move a liquid sans a tool
And master vision through refraction’s eyes.

Zoological Name: Toxotes jaculatrix
