My Humming Word

The Makar Sankranti this year
Is more pious and singular event.
One of the famous Hindu festivals
Dedicated to the solar deity, Surya…
Based on the planetary movements
It’s an instance of transition of Sun
From zodiac Sagittarius to Capricorn
From the south to north hemisphere
Marking onset of change in season.
The occasion is widely celebrated
By various names in different parts
As new dawn and a harvest festival.

This year the day of Sankranti
Is most pious with added meaning
For Hindus and the others as well
Who have belief in Sanatana Dharma
As the occasion coincides with
The Maha-Kumbha Mela at Prayagraj
The largest ever cultural event on planet
With people’s assembly for Amrit Snaan*
Once in a span of every 144 years
At the Triveni-Sangam confluence
Of holy Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.

Sankranti is the festival of culture
With many names in different states
Of priceless and invaluable heritage
That puts together all, and threads
The country into the garland of unity.

* Verbatim translation in English would be ‘nectar bath’; it implies a divine or holy bath.
