My Humming Word

  1. Poem

Jeevem Shardah Shatam

And he told me
To live for hundred years
Of a happy and healthy life
You must go early to bed at night
Get up early and go out for a walk
Relish what you eat, drink & share
Get on well with friends & confrère
Cozy & comfortable with all seasons
Through spring, summer, fall & winter
This keeps you healthy and a long life.

I verily responded
What if even without listening him
I have followed it all since early age
For me happiness means a ‘content life’
I have no yearning to live hundred years
All that I understand and always pray for
Is that I should live only as long
As I am healthy and fit to carry out
All my necessities and chorus of life
Sans being dependent on mercy of others.

Note: Jeevem Shardah Shatam (जीवेम शरद शतम्) is a Sanskrit great vakya (saying) which literally means “Hundred autumns we see (or live)”. It is a prayer too that has received a great significance in various cultures but specially in Hinduism since ancient age.
