Swami Vivekananda
While staying in the United States
Was once walking down
Through a street in Chicago
Clad in untailored saffron clothes,
A lady raised apprehension
With her fellow kins
If he was a gentleman.
The Swami overhearing
Her unsolicited remarks
Slowly walked up to her
Sought an excuse to tell her –
While in her country
The tailor makes a gentleman
But in his country
It’s the character of the man
That makes a gentleman.
