Today this was my father
And patriarch of the family
Tomorrow this will be me
Others will follow one by one
The ultimate reality and fate
Of deceptive & elusive world:
Here every visible thing is
Cyclic, transient and mortal…
Many people are so often
Hubristic and narcissistic
About material possessions
And outward appearances
When this body is perishable;
If anything is tenable and true
This is only the Atman* (or Self)
Being eternal and immortal.
* Atman is a Sanskrit word; English substitute of which is taken as ‘soul’
