My Humming Word

Today, while snapping a flock of pigeons
Revived my childhood memory of a fable
That I read in Hindu classic Panchtantra
How a wise assembly of pigeons escaped
From the machiavellian fowler’s dragnet!

Ubiquitous through much of the planet
From tropical forests to urban tower blocks
Pigeons are among the successful species
With fascinating and complex behaviours
To live as communal and gregarious birds.

During breeding season, pigeons prefer
To live in pairs to mate and raise squabs*
But flock together in non-breeding season
That gives them an advantage of protection
In air and on the ground against predation
A lesson man may learn in their own bastion.
* Term used for baby pigeons or chicks
